ARTISTS IN CONVENTION

Hong Kong based fine art photographer Olaf Mueller juxtaposes conventional photographic methods with modern digital technologies to create surreal and visually potent compositions. His captivating work displays a powerful duality between the real and the imagined, between conjured images and visual apparitions and between serene stillness and dynamic compositions. The results are soulful, mystic, deeply creative. The images employ clean lines and a multitude of different layers, textures and objects. From a distance, the work seems static and symmetrical. However on a close approach; asymmetrical elements emerge, creating an element of movement, yet maintaining a careful balance between distortion and clarity. Vintage and contemporary!

' I uncover magnificence in the details- the grains of fibre in a fabric, or a story that crisp lines on a face imparts on us, in my work; i lend myself to a surrealist perspective'. Beauty in the sharpness of an image or the vibrancy of saturated colour, in the fine art synopsis.

MY IDENTITY
Art is a mirror of identity in individuals or society. It is a reflection; of what we feel, think, practise, ritualise, believe and our character. It is a method of presentation that communicates and reflects in our identity. The personal project that I will be looking at is to identify myself. I have spent half of my life abroad living out in Hong Kong, as it is a personal project, I will be looking at all the things that resemble my character. Such as music, food, animals, nature, people, architecture, sports and games. I was looking through books that puzzle your eyes, trying to work out what was in the picture. I want to relate things like that; blending myself within surroundings that remind me of who I am. Tweaking the idea could consist of starting with an outline of myself and put all the things that i like; and through to my final piece create a mix of different shots shaped into words or my face?
Artists to include in my work: Chuck Close, David Hockney and Beijing artist Liu Bolin
The aim . For this project is to collect things that revolve around me. As I am from two different backgrounds and now in the U.K, my aim is to incorporate photography layering and art within my surroundings that I have been from. It will be like an illusion,, painting on people to deliver a message to the viewer who will be looking at my work; trying to work out what is in my landscape.
Things that I could do:
1. The beach- summer things such as bucket n spade, icecream, corona, friends and family, surfing...
2. Music- a walkman of the music that i like, music on albums lyrics within my work.
3. Travelling- favourite places you've been to, maps? Where's Wally theme? of finding you...
4. Art- painting on people, showing what art you like and why?
5. People- people that inspire you- artists and photographers
6. Food
7. Architecture

I started researching in things that i had been to, what music i liked and usual things that I would come up with that defines me, but I had a tutorial and people seemed to think it was funny in what i recall 'Where's Pippa', in taking a similar aspect in children's books of Where's wally? So I had a long thought about this, I intend in my research to jot down all the things that revolve around me but get to the real deal of  doing iconic photography in music; I love music, most of my life has been revolved around of it and whenever i listen to music, it sparks a memory of a place, a person or a general activity that i have done listening to that music.( For example, Circle of Life- by Elton john, reminds me when i first watched The Lion King, but also going on a family holiday to Nairobi in  Kenya as there are the obvious animals that would relate to the film. )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abjAqvdGZgM- This was my favorite songs as a kid, living out in Hong Kong, brought back happy memories.

TESTING/EXPERIMENTING-  By doing this, I have messed around on Photoshop incorporating photographs from my childhood and up to now, including art, old photographs and landscapes.
LIU BOLIN- Liu Bolin's art is intended to show how city surroundings affect people. He claims to make a statement about his place in society. He sees himself as an outsider whose artistic efforts are not always valued, especially in his native country. He uses himself as a blank canvas. He paints his body to merge as seamlessly as possible with what is behind him. The inspiration behind his work has a sense of not fitting in to modern society and was a silent protest against the persecution of artists.

'Some people call me the invisible man, but for me it's what is not seen in a picture which is really what tells the story'.

What can you see?
He examines the ways in which the real events depicted can serve new purposes. Liu created a space for the Chinese artist, preserving their social status and highlighting their often troubled relationship with their physical surroundings. ''Shadow'' in his work draws the concept of the helplessness of the individual; instead of taking the individual in the face of society as its a focal point, it explores the relationship of the individual to its natural environment. I did a few demonstrating on behalf of his work; as i am from two different backgrounds, i feel like I've been an outsider because i was brought up differently living in China for half of my life. I created a submerged photograph of myself within an atlas with some text saying 'lets get lost' which states saying lets get lost in a world we don't know, have an experience learning things yet to come to ourselves.

TRAVEL

Testing these ideas, i opened an atlas and picked a random page and put scrabble pieces on it, random things came to my head and what i did to incorporate other photographs was to layer myself within the background. I made it possible by using opacity, filter tools, played around using different methods in Photoshop, using the original photographs for evidence that it was my photograph. The artist that inspired me was Liu Bolin. I did another photograph of these from the four seasons, I took a photograph of leaves with its reds and oranges back in the Autumn term and used the same photograph of myself within it.

I then went into experimenting with different photographs put together as one. Such as the tree in the background, the photograph of me and my friend when we were little; looks as though we climbing through the trees and entering a world that is 'half-caste' of China and the U.K. The chinese symbols relate to where i was brought up, the never ending traffic jams whereas coming back to the u.k in the summer was a change, being by the british sea and living with
the british culture.

But this also reminds me of the artist Chuck close; whose visual elements- shapes, textures, volumes, shadows, and highlights or the photograph itself. With a paintbrush clamped between his teeth, he developed a new way to paint. 'The event' he'd developed a method of assembling imagery from tiny loops and lozengers of colour arranged in a grid; its an art at once richly human and hugely distanced.

Through experimenting; i've come across a link between Chuck Close and my work combined; the landscapes that i use and then put it into filter mode and use opacity to submerge myself in looks like a photographic version of Chuck Close!
I then went on to looking into the artist David Hockney, whose work i am very interested in which is the photography cubism. His motivation in producing them was to introduce three artistic elements which a single photograph cannot have, namely layered time, space and narrative. Hockney points out that single photo expresses a single instant, and so cannot represent time or narrative. When it comes to photo cubism; I love creating a collage made of pieces from a landscape, a piece of art and making it into something so much better.- David Hockney website.

As a kid, i was always a big fan of 'where's wally'? Catching out where was wally etc, so i intended to take out pages of where's wally illustration and put myself within making it harder to find me. Almost like a puzzle! and called it 'where's dowie'?'

COMPLEMENTARY STUDIES: WATER BASED IMAGERY

TITLE: AQUARIUS
For the next 10 weeks, I have chosen for my complementary studies is Water Based imagery which i am interested to learn using a camera and video underwater in pools and the sea.
Timetable:
1/03/12- 1pm-4pm (FASHION ROOM) T2.7
8/03/12- (POOL TRIP) 1-4 bikini- Marjon uni. I was unable to attend this shoot as i was really unwell so i had drift along when it came down to the review session to see what the class had produced.
15/03/12- IMAGE REVIEW SESSION- T1.12
22/03/12- GROUP A: 1pm-2:30 pool session
29/03/12- IMAGE REVIEW SESSION

10/05/12- TUTORIALS
17/05/12- GROUP CRIT ( DEADLINE)

Above, shows the timetable of what is happening over the next 10 weeks. In our introductory brief, we were given areas to consider for our project which are:
1. Stills or moving image
2. Sports/Documents/Fine art/Environmental fashion
3. Underwater or Surface/land
4. Essential kit
5. Locations
6. Health and safety

POOL SESSION
1. Sport
- Snorkels
2. Fish Eye Lens
3. Auto Focus
4. Time consuming taking shots
5. Flash
- Shoot in the upward position
- Exhale going down to the bottom of the pool
- Always have your flash ON- saturates color, moody shots

I have looked at a few artists/photographers and national geographic videos that I was quite fond of; as i am a Fine Art student, i wanted to explore the depths of different sides of Art and found this module fascinating as it involves experimenting with different medias in the water/surface.
The first artist that I found interesting is Sophie Lewis who is an underwater director exploring internal landscapes. 'Water Consciousness'; Sophie explores in her practice the depths of our relationship with water. In its nature, her work is two fold: as a teacher and as an artist.

" I like getting lost, because I love finding out where I am".
The subject moves away from the ethereal and float imagery visually associated with water and offers instead a more grounded and weightless sense of being. The concept of her photographs show that the water invites us to surrender to a profound sense of timelessness and presents us with the possibility that these shifts, with their deep sense of falling and sinking into being are comparable to experiences of consciousness experiences centuries ago? Fueled in a frenetic way and unsettled way, without travel and telecommunications, daily life; handcrafting of objects and generations of established communities, (loot and past).
The fear of falling seeks to make apparent connections between the past, acts of crafting and submergence.

I love the way the artist has interpreted life models that look as though they are standing in a surfaced room but with a bleak background. It's more remarkable that it is done in a tank with water effects being underwater. For the pool shoots, I managed to get a few good shots of reflections, abstractions of bubbles and models posing underwater.  Below, is one of my favorite shots as it involve two things: reflection and contrast of the photograph. I made the photograph look more vivid in light as i wanted to have a figure shape  in the water. This reminds me of Lewis's work but in colour as the stillness of the figure is interacting with the water surroundings.

The second artist that i looked at which is my area of knowledge in Fine Art; is Wolf Gang Bloch who is a surfer and artist. His art reveals much about the man who creates it. But the hints are subtle:

" the subdued palette, the modest and unexpected materials; all utilized to reduce traditional seascapes to their essence and in the process imbue them with compelling intensity. Sublime and terribly romantic."
Everyday contact with pure nature sets the direction of his art. With the help of colour and natural texture of surfaces he creates an endless ocean and ideal wave lines. Bloch's idea ''cuts'' surface of the canvas, like a surfboard cuts the wave. Surf art began to be considered as a serious art.

" The rich colours and the texture of the land, I love nature and the ocean, the way it smells and the way the breeze feels on my skin. I kind of stumbled across it. I used to pain the obvious line up scenes with perfect waves, perfect lightning, palm trees etc. Out of frustration one day I painted over of my paintings, created two fields of colour. the brush createda  small mark that resembled a wave right between the two blocks of colour. I was immediately impressed by what I saw... Now I see waves all over the place, cracks on concrete, wood, tile etc".

As I am doing Fine Art, I produced a piece of artwork involving layers of colour on a canvas using oil paints. The painting shows an abstract seascape, i went over and over with colours as i stumbled across what i wanted to intend to do with the piece. It reminds me of Rothko as the layers of blues and greens link into one another and the final bit which is on the right which shows the blends of blues and whites and  that show the waves; and the golds shows the sand bed.

Below, shows a recent photograph that I took on Bantham Beach, it was a really stormy day and the waves were exciting to shoot with my camera. I bent down on my knees to get the wave crashing onto a rock at a wide angle approach, in editing I highlighted the contrast in the wave 'splash' and the background dark to get the dramatic effect.

These 5 photographs demonstrate my thought and skill in producing these experiments using my camera half in and out of the water. The first photograph on the top left shows someone pulling down the balloon under the water with a light shining through it. These photographs show reflection and contrast.

When it came down to experimenting in the pool at Marjohn University; I wanted to look at the aspects of abstract photography, so that meant looking at macro pieces in the water e.g, bubbles, light, reflections and shapes. The first experiments that I did were the light and shape in capturing a balloon in and out of the water. The camera that i used was a Panasonic lumix which was actually decent, able to get half the lens in and out of the water was really interesting to experiment with.
